SALZBURG BREWERIES BREW ONLY WITH WHOLE-LEAF HOPS. AFTER ALL, ANY BEER IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE HOPS THAT GIVE IT ITS UNMISTAKABLE FLAVOUR. ON 2 MAY, THE BREWMASTERS OF THE AUSTRIAN PRIVATE BREWERIES ANSWERED QUESTIONS FROM INTERESTED VISITORS AS PART OF THEIR “HOP TALK” EVENT.
Hops give beer its bite, its pleasant bitterness and its refreshing character. It is the “soul” of the beer, as brewers like to refer to this essential ingredient. The Austrian private breweries brew their various beers in the shared spirit of Austria’s legendary beer culture, using aromatic whole-leaf hops. To share their insights about the art of brewing, and to clear up the myth that there’s something strange or unusual about brewing with whole-leaf hops, private brewers here in Austria opened their doors to interested visitors for the “Hopfengespräche” (Hop Talk) event.
Our crowdfunding project, launched under the motto “Diversity and variety, not one beer fits all”, successfully reached its funding goal for the 18 January deadline, and can now become a reality thanks to our over 200 supporters. We’re very happy to see that a diverse and independent Austrian beer culture is important to so many people all across Austria. The 80,000 euros in collected funds will be invested in two new smaller innovation tanks in which small quantities of beer can be stored, making it easier for us to pursue new developments with our beers. These tanks can also be used for tastings.
In exchange for their support, all BRAUfunders will receive several years of our beer subscription service, the Trumer Hopfenbox, along with vouchers, exclusive brewery events, and many other advantages. The successful completion of this project also shows that innovative financing models can fit in just fine with our otherwise rather traditional approach to brewing. A full-bodied Märzen Zwicklbier the way they used to make them: totally natural with a subtle cloudiness. Brewed in accordance with the Austrian “Reinheitsgebot” (purity law) of 1516, it’s a charming tribute to the original brewing process.
Our Märzen-Zwickl is brewed according to the original process, leaving the unfiltered yeasts in in the beer for added taste. The result is a milder, more full-bodied beer with multi-layered flavour nuances. The cloudiness is intentionally kept subtle to emphasise the beer’s refreshing character. Our Slow Brewing philosophy with its longer ageing phase pays off here, clearing the beer gently and naturally.
The Obertrumer Original is available on tap in bars and restaurants, or by the bottle, the case (20 x 0.5 l), or in six-packs in our TRUMER Shops on the Obertrum brewery grounds and at the Trumerei in the Salzburg STADTWERK, or in selected Spar supermarkets and warehouses in the Flachgau region and the city of Salzburg.
